Misty Channel
Our area is laced with canals. These
channels began as irrigation canals for the agricultural crops. Once housing developments were put in, they’ve become drainage canals where the many ponds and canals are pumped into the Barge Canal, designed for shipping produce (rice in particular) from here out to the wide world. This area of Northern California supplies most of the rice Japanese people eat daily. For me, they are magical channels filled with egrets and blue herons, lined by tule reeds and cottonwoods.
