Being immersed in the light and colours of an environment has become crucial to my approach to painting. I love excavating the colours from life, an act of discovering the particulars and subtleties that one couldn’t possibly make up in the studio. It is like an act of self-emptying - handing over one’s autonomy to the subject and allowing yourself to be led by looking. The painting is of my old housemate's room after she left. I loved how the light through the red curtains covered everything in this pink glow. Working from observation, and at such a large scale, it was a process of seeking - chasing the shapes as the light changed.
