This painting touches some of the human sorrow we are experiencing. I unexpectedly came across this cedar wax-wing while going out to paint. I knew I had to paint it. I spent two hours in the field and then I wrapped the bird and put it in my pocket. Once home I placed it in the freezer and a couple of weeks later I took it out to finish the painting from observation. The ground I finished from memory. I kept waiting for the bird to breath but it did not. The yellow aspen leaves are like thought bubbles from heaven in this memento mori painting....sometimes we go knowingly to our subject and sometimes the subject knocks on our door.
