I painted this in the studio from photos and sketches of the Western Slope of Colorado near a small town called Paonia where my brother lives. I painted many plein air sketches on my last visit and in each one I was struck by the geometry of the landscape. In this painting, I decided to see if I could succeed in breaking the rule of not putting the focal point directly in the center. By moving the elements of the landscape around so tha the weight was distributed in a way that felt right but was not static, I think I acheived my goal. My medium was oil on canvas and I used brushes, palette knives, and rubber scrapers.
