Walking toward a local drainage ditch early one March day I was absolutely taken by this scene. The sky above was reflecting so deep blue in the water while the sky behind the nearby town looked ablaze from a low easterly sun. I proceeded to do 6 or eight color sketches in oil on panels, a lot of drawings with written notes to remind me of things, as well as a photo shoot. The collective materials were used in the studio to compose this piece stressing the colors and action of all things over, upon and within the water below as the cattails prepared to rejuvenate for summer.
