Women who have fought injustice, fought for equality, defied the status quo, defended the powerless, persisted in the face of adversity, and often changed the course of our times.
While there are thousands of women that I could have placed in my painting, these women resonate with me either because they have inspired me, given me hope for the future, or because as an immigrant myself, I share the love for our adopted country, and sympathize with the struggle of assimilation into a new culture.
But most importantly, each one of these women have displayed courage and grace under the most difficult circumstances.
And so, though they are uniquely themselves, they are also a symbol.
Greta represents all the young people who are impacted by the destruction of animal species and rising temperatures, and have taken a stance. Malala represents all the young women who struggle to be educated and contribute to society; Emma stands for the youth who fight our surrender to the Gun Lobby, but reach out in love, Rachel is every journalist who lays bare facts ...Rosa and Ruth defined their lives fighting for the principle that We Are Created Equal...... and Ingrid has been a voice for the voiceless.
